Her documentary film and photography work focus on human rights and indigenous cultural issues.

Smith received her undergraduate degree in English Literature and Theatre from Wheaton College in Norton, Massachusetts, and studied film and theater at Goldsmiths' College, London. She earned her M.F.A. in Cinema at San Francisco State University.
